Human perception of the build environment

In this research area we develop and validate evidence-based models for human perception of the build environment. For this we consider multiple aspects of human comfort, health and productivity as well as the emotional and behavioral impact that the build environment has to human. In the research we collect several types of data through measurements, surveys, interviews, observations, clinical tests, simulations etc. We combine both on-site field study from the real world and more controlled experiments in virtual reality (VR) or a climate chamber. The scope is ultimately to increase human well-being in the build environment by application of evidence-based models as decision-support in the building design stage.

Examples of research topics are listed below:

  • Thermal comfort
  • Air quality and emissions
  • Acoustic
  • Visual comfort and daylight
  • View quality and privacy
  • Emotional and behavioral impacts on humans
  • Demographical impact on perception (age, gender etc.)
  • Productivity in workplaces
  • Learning in schools
  • Sleep quality in homes
  • Building related syndromes
  • Hospital recovery time
