Metal structures

Metal structures research focuses on the behaviour, design, and durability of steel and advanced metallic structures used in civil and offshore engineering. The activities address strength, fatigue, fracture, and long-term performance of fabricated components and structures under realistic loading and environmental conditions. Research and development combine experimental testing, microstructural characterisation, advanced modelling, and data-driven approaches to improve reliability, sustainability, and life-cycle performance. Emphasis is placed on high-strength steels, novel multi-principal element alloys, additive manufacturing and lightweight solutions for bridges, energy infrastructure, and marine structures. The work supports safer designs, reduced material use, and the green transition through improved structural efficiency.
