Urban densification is a global trend. This comes with clear advantages such as minimisation of land, material, and energy use, reduced commute times, and better infrastructure, e.g. mass-transit systems. However, with more people living closely together, denser traffic, and more lightweight buildings, environmental vibrations and building acoustics become an increasing problem. In this context we investigate the dynamic properties of construction materials and buildings, soil and underground structures, using laboratory and field test combined with advanced computational methods. We develop efficient tools that allow timely assessment of vibration problem and conduct research on mitigation measures.
