  3. FATIMP

    Halid Can Yildirim

The aim of this project is to study the effectiveness of fatigue strength improvement methods based
on the induced residual stress state and the establishment of smooth weld profile.
I have been performing analyses on HFMI treated welds and TIG dressed welds in order to verify the
expected fatigue strength improvements for a residual stress treatment and a weld profile modification
    method, respectively.

  4. TENGEN

Halid Can Yildirim & H. Remes

The purpose of this project is to assess the mechanical performance of a lightweight stator structure
for very large diameter permanent magnet synchronous generator.
I did fatigue strength analyses of a full-scale stator model by considering advanced joining technologies,
e.g. post-weld treatment, in order to present a concept for a novel lightweight internal stator
    structure.

  5. FATWELDHSS

    Halid Can Yildirim & S. Vanrosten-berghe

The aim of the project was to develop methods for improving the performance of welded high-strength
steels (yield strength of 700 and 960 MPa) at thicknesses of 5-20 mm for use in fatigue-loaded welded
    structures.
I proposed one approach to fatigue assessment for HFMI-improved joints. I presented a yield strength
correction procedure which relates with the material yield strength and I verified it based on the
constant amplitude R = 0.1 axial fatigue data. I proposed design recommendations by stress analysis
methods based on the nominal stress, the structural hot spots tress and the effective notch stress.
Further I showed that all the proposed design recommendations in this study are conservative with
respect to available fatigue test data.

  6. Fimecc – LIGHT SPR

Halid Can Yildirim & G. Marquis

The goal of the project was to gain a leading international position in the development of a future generation
of advanced materials, structures and systems, with reduced weight, increased performance,
improved energy efficiency and a reduced environmental footprint.
I performed an experimental round robin test procedure on HFMI-improved high strength steel welded
specimens. Experimental test results indicated that all of the HFMI-improved welds from the four
HFMI equipment manufacturers satisfied the previously-proposed characteristic S-N line which is
based on both the material yield strength and the specimen geometry.

  7. SOLROCK

Halid Can Yildirim & S Ôzüpek

The goal of this project was to develop a procedure for reliable structural analysis and service life
estimation of a solid rocket motor grain.
I did structural stress analyses of a full-scale model of a solid propellant rocket motor under actual
loading histories. An accurate material model of propellant was verified with including material ageing.
