Research at Structural Dynamics and Geotechnical Engineering

Our research philosophy emphasises scientific excellence, innovation, and practical application in civil engineering. We combine experimental research, fieldwork, and computational modelling to advance the field. Our state-of-the-art laboratories include facilities for soil mechanics, structural dynamics, testing structural elements, and a wave flume.

In the field, we employ advanced techniques to monitor ocean waves, soil deformation, and geotechnical structures, along with dynamic measurements of buildings and infrastructure. Our research leverages sophisticated computational models for simulating and analysing structures, soil, and water waves.

Key research areas include:

  • Bridges: Advanced analysis and method development, with a focus on dynamics and aerodynamics.
  • Soil–Structure Interaction, Soil Modelling, and Tunnels: Enhancing predictive capabilities and performance.
  • Ocean Waves and Offshore Structures: Measuring waves and innovating resilient analysis techniques.
  • Timber Structures: Promoting sustainable building practices through detailed analysis.
  • Wind Turbines: Advanced dynamic modelling, vibration control, and environmental load predictions
  • Ground Vibration and Building Acoustics: Mitigating impacts and enhancing environments.
  • Structural Dynamics and Health Monitoring: Ensuring safety and longevity through advanced monitoring techniques.

We bridge academia and industry through collaboration, translating research into practical solutions. Our goal is to shape the future of civil engineering by addressing current challenges and anticipating future needs.
