Research

My primary area of research focuses on health and immune responses in pigs during critical and stressful periods, such as farrowing, as well as the development of diagnostic tools for use on pig farms. This includes the application of electronic systems for the automated monitoring of pigs (Precision Livestock Farming, PLF), aimed at improving animal health, welfare, and productivity.

In addition, I investigate the underlying mechanisms (pathogenesis) of reduced milk production in sows — known as Post-partum Dysgalactia Syndrome (PDS) — a condition that not only affects the health and welfare of the sows themselves, but also significantly impacts piglet survival and well-being. The sows immune status is assessed through the analysis of various biomarkers related to inflammation and stress, which are evaluated alongside clinical signs and behavioral patterns.

Other research areas include the assessment of wounds in pigs, as well as the investigation of behavior and systemic physiological responses in pigs exposed to CO₂ and other gases.

Teaching activities

Course manager for Basic Clinical Skills (In Danish: Basale Kliniske Færdigheder, BKF) on the bachelor's program in Veterinary Medicine, 5th and 6th semester. Responsible for course descriptions for production animals, pigs on the master's program in Veterinary Medicine.

Collaborations

Over the years, I have developed a strong national and international research network through interdisciplinary collaborations across academia, government, and industry. In Denmark, my primary academic collaborators are based at the University of Copenhagen and Aalborg University, while internationally I have established partnerships with several academic institutions across Europe. One notable example is my participation in the large EU-funded project SeaMark, where I investigated the effects of fermented seaweed on sows and piglets.

Key industry partners include the Danish Agriculture & Food Council (SEGES – Pig), BioCV – Livestock Monitoring (Germany), AHV International (The Netherlands), Zinpro Corporation (USA), and SAGRO I/S (Denmark). In addition, all major Danish swine veterinary practices have been consistently open to collaboration, as have a number of innovative Danish pig producers. Both groups are essential to enabling my colleagues and me to conduct applied, on-farm research.

Consultancy

I am certified in science-based advisory work through AU-Tech and have provided expert guidance to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration on projects related to piglet castration, the transport of weaners, and the depopulation of pigs using CO₂.
