Growing Interest in engineering at Aarhus University
Despite a slight nationwide decline in applications to engineering programmes, Aarhus University is seeing a positive development with a six percent increase in first-choice applicants to engineering programmes.

The application window for higher education in Denmark closed on Saturday, July 5. This means universities across the country – including Aarhus University – can now take stock of how many students have applied to various programmes.
And when it comes to engineering, the numbers are promising. A total of 1,271 people selected an engineering programme at Aarhus University as their first choice. That’s a six percent increase compared to 2024 – and a new record.
This development is welcomed by Louise Møller Haase, Vice-Dean for Education at the Faculty of Technical Sciences:
“We’re seeing a growing interest in engineering at Aarhus University. That’s good news not just for us, but for Denmark as a whole – especially for the many companies in need of skilled engineers,” she says.
“I’m pleased that so many young people are motivated to study engineering at Aarhus University. Now it’s our responsibility to welcome them and prepare them to drive intelligent change through technology in their future careers.”
Major Increase at AU Herning
While most engineering programs at AU are based on the main campus in Aarhus, the university also offers a programme in Au Herning. And here, th numbers have skyrocketed.
The BEng in Electrical Energy Technology has received 70 first-choice applications – twice as many as last year’s record intake.
“For the second year in a row, applications to our programme in AU Herning are growing. It suggests we’ve hit the mark with our fully digitalized format, targeting students who live far from a university,” says Louise Møller Haase.
“It also aligns perfectly with our mission to educate more engineers for the green transition – across the entire country.”
One key feature of the program in AU Herning is that students can complete their entire degree online.
Applications spread broadly across programmes
The many applicants are spread across both BEng and BSc programmes. The top draw is the BEng in Software Technology, which received 141 first-choice applications. The biggest year-over-year increase comes from the BSc in Electrical Engineering, which has a 57 percent rise in applicants.
Altogether, the BSc engineering programs received 349 first-choice applications this year – a 15 percent increase from last year. The BSc in Mechanical Engineering stands out with 109 first-priority applicants, making it one of the most popular choices among prospective students.
Note: These numbers are based on preliminary application data. Final figures will be published on AU’s press site early next week.
